Food Review: Ken of Japan

March 10, 2011 by kim 4 Comments

My favorite kind of food is definitely Japanese food. I could eat sushi everyday. When I’m not having sushi, you can find me at the teppan table (very rarely though since it does get quite pricy). Lucky for me, there’s a teppan restaurant right down the street from me. Ken of Japan.

Teppan starts off with a salad with Japanese dressing and miso soup.

Mine: Chicken– served with sauteed vegetables, shrimp, bean sprouts, and steamed rice.

DB’s: Chicken & Steak combo.
You can get fried rice for a little more (and it’s delicious!), but I opted for simple steamed rice this time. I buy coupons from restaurant.com for this place so the bill isn’t too bad. I don’t think there’s a bad teppan place. How can you do it wrong? People are watching you as you cook… you better not mess up!
Everything is wonderful about this place. Sure, the restaurant itself is a little run down and could use a facelift, but that doesn’t affect the food. Rice is sticky, the meat is cooked how you want it, the waiters and cooks are all very friendly, and the flavor is up to par. What more could you ask for? They also give you a ginger and mustard dipping sauce that I usually avoid. My DB slurps up the ginger sauce like it’s chocolate milk, though. Blechh.
My DB’s dream is to have one of the teppan grills in our future house. Wouldn’t that be fancy? That’s definitely some wishful thinking!

Okay, I really need to discuss this with someone.. Has anyone seen the movie “Splice?” My DB and I got it on Netflix recently and watched it two days ago. Ever since then, I just can’t get it out of my head. It has to be one of the most disturbing movies that I’ve ever seen… definitely top three most disturbing, anyway. I couldn’t even watch two of the scenes. I was hiding my head in my DB’s shoulder while he was being the tough guy, telling me to just watch the dang movie. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I won’t say what happened, but ahhhhhhhhh! Get it out of my head. Please.
I’m thinking of doing a FAQ post this week and would love to answer any questions you may have, right here on my blog! Just leave a question in the comments on this post and let’s get the ball rolling!
I’m still working on those massive Nutella jars that I got from Costco. These definitely did the job– an easy dish with minimal ingredients and a bang of flavor. I used a dark chocolate cake mix since that’s what I had on hand, but any chocolate mix will do. To sum up the recipe, it’s a Nutella cheesecake on top of a soft, moist, & dense cake. Perfect! I especially loved the texture of the piece. The top turned out nice and crackly, while the layers just melded together. From Let’s Dish

Cake:

  • 1 package devil’s food cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
Filling:

  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 (16 oz.) box powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix together the cake mix, egg, and butter until well combined. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 9×13 baking pan.
  3. For the filling: Beat the cream cheese and Nutella until creamy.
  4. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, and butter. Slowly add the powdered sugar until incorporated. Spread the Nutella mixture over the pressed cake batter.
  5. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. The center should still be a little gooey, so don’t over bake!

Food Review: Diddy Riese

March 2, 2011 by kim 12 Comments

From all of the things in the LA/Westwood area to do and eat, Diddy Riese remains at the top of my list. I used to come here regularly when I was in school and was too lazy to whip up a batch of my own cookies. Diddy Riese always saved the day. With their unbeatable prices, ($3.75 for a dozen freshly baked cookies?!) nothing else compares.

I always get a sandwich when I go: cinnamon sugar cookies with cookie dough ice cream. The cookies are sturdy and soft, just the way I like them! The different combinations of cookie and ice cream are limitless. I remember when the sandwiches used to be a dollar… but hey, I guess the prices had to go up in order to keep up. No harm done, it’s still dirt cheap.
Diddy Riese also sells other things such as brownies and shaved ice, but I always stick to the norm. Call me boring, but the sandwiches are just too good to pass up.
The place is packed on weekend nights and the parking sucks, but the line moves fast and I always park in the parking garage just down the street. There’s not really a place to sit down and eat it either, but who needs to sit down when you have all of Westwood to explore?
