Food Review: King’s Burgers

April 21, 2011 by kim 3 Comments

When we’re trying to decide what to eat, King’s is always an option. It’s nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. It has something for everyone– whether it be sushi, burgers, sandwiches, or shakes. I always get a chicken terriyaki bowl with california rolls and the DB always gets a sandwich. What can I say, we like to stick to tradition.

Mine:: it also has fried onion strips in to top it off!

Last time we came here, we ran into Brian McKnight. So you never know who you’re going to run into! Sure the place is a bit run down, but it’s homey, the food is delish, and the service is awesome.

Tip: Ask for some ranch to dip your fries into.. they have the perfect ranch!

P.S. Typing on a French keyboard is a lot harder than I thought it would be. If only I could pluck out and rearrange some letters….

I’m back from SF! And very glad to be back, might I add. No matter what, I will always be a SoCal girl. I’m just not made for cold weather… which is kind of ironic, because it looks like I’ll be moving up north this summer. I went with my DB for admitted students weekend at Berkeley, and he really fell in love with Boalt. We did our fair share of eating, walking, and mingling, but darn, it feels good to be home. Foodie pictures to come!
While home, I pop cookie dough bites like there’s not tomorrow. So when I saw this recipe from Visions of Sugar Plum, it was a given that I had to make them. You can buy the cookie dough bites candy from Target, the movie theatre, or even Dollar Tree!
These cookies are perfect. Hearty, soft, and chewy.. the trifecta of cookies. Give them a go, cookie dough lovers!
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts, toasted
  • 1 cup chocolate chunks
  • 2 (4 ounce) packages chocolate covered cookie dough bites
  1. Sift together flour, baking soda, and sea salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat oil, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs and vanilla. Cream in softened butter until mixed.
  3. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in dry ingredients until incorporated.
  4. Stir in walnuts, chocolate chunks, and cookie dough candy until combined.
  5. Chill cookie dough in the freezer for at least an hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  7. Roll the dough into balls and place on cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until light golden brown on top.

Buttermilk Biscuits

First of all, thanks for all your suggestions on what to do with a carton of buttermilk over on my Facebook Fan Page! I ended up making one of the more popular suggestions, buttermilk biscuits. I was so excited with how they turned out that I even made a video. What got over me? I have no idea. So here it is, my very first video (nothing special, it’s just shot using my webcam so don’t get too excited). After watching it, I realized I may or may not have biscuit batter in my hair. But hey, that’s life.

Scary, right? Let’s stick to pictures… This is the dough after it’s been sitting in the fridge for a day.

And this is how I chose to splat them on the baking sheet.

Melted a bit of butter…

I brushed the butter on prior to making in one batch, and after they were baked in another.

So here’s the recipe, courtesy of Melissa and dedicated to Sarah (“my favorite Southern friend”). 🙂 Thanks again, readers!

Makes approximately 2 dozen large biscuits.

  • ‎1 package yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 1/4 cup flour
  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the baking powder, baking soda, salt, vegetable oil, buttermilk, sugar, and flour.
  3. Add in the yeast mixture. Mix until well combined.
  4. Keep in refrigerator and pinch off as much as you need. It can be rolled out or dropped onto greased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes or until brown.
*It gets better each day it sits in the refrigerator. (Melissa’s note that I whole heartedly agree with!)

I chose to brush mine with melted butter. I tried putting the butter on pre baking and post baking. In my opinion, they turned out better when the butter is brushed on post baking. Also, the dough is very, very sticky to work with. Don’t believe me? See for yourself:

“Splatting” them on the baking sheet was wayyyyy easier than rolling it out, but if you’re feeling courageous, I say go for it. Looks can be deceiving, though. It actually washes off your hands quite easily under warm water. I only know that because I had to wash one hand using that one hand so that I could take this picture.

P.S. I’ll be heading to San Fran/Berkeley for this weekend. Does anyone have any food suggestions that I must check out? Thanks in advance!
