Chocolate Chip Oreo Cookies

April 19, 2010 by kim 137 Comments

I procrastinate from my homework the best when I’m baking. Seriously. Instead of writing a 1000 word paper, I browse through my bookmarks on my computer and decide what I want to bake. After figuring out my next culinary mission, I get right to it and start mixing my little heart away. Once everything is set and cooled, I figure, “Well… I already have all my materials out, why not bake something else?” This is where the process starts all over again; It’s like a never-ending circle of baking that will, in turn, doom my academic career.

Were these cookies worth it? Totally. The concept of a cookie in a cookie is just genius. Kind of like cookie dough in cookie dough. Wait, what? Is that even possible? Anyways, I made these cookies into little itty-bitty baby ones because I wanted bite sized treats. That resulted in me eating a million cookies instead of one. Oops. They’re full of flavor (taste just like cookies n’ cream ice cream, really) and the oreo texture in it is wonderful! They’re also chewy, not crumbly. I subbed baking powder for baking soda because I didn’t have any on hand, which is why my cookies are a bit puffy than normal. That actually works even better for mini cookies! Adapted from Picky Palate.

I’m the same way! These days I have definitive spurts. Yesterday, for example, I made lemon curd, blueberry cupcakes with lemon zest, and then whipped together some pizza dough on top of making dinner for myself. I spend my “days” of research looking up recipes for later. It’s terrible and my lovehandles hate it! I love the idea of a cookie mailing. I wish this poor med student could afford it! Btw these cookies look genius.

You and I are so alike it’s crazy. I swear, the day before an exam, I always feel the need to bake both a loaf of bread and a cake. It’s insane. And will lead to my demise. But eh, what can you do.

Your idea to start a cookie mailing list is awesome! What a great way to make money. If you’re going to be bakign anyway, might as well!

First off, I would like to say how similar we are that we both procrastinate so much when we think up recipes. I do this all the time when I just can’t pay attention in biology. Second, your blog is beautiful and the pictures you take are absolutely perfect. And third, I used this recipe on my blog but instead of using chocolate chips, I substituted white chocolate chips and I added oreo instant pudding mix to the batter and my best friend and boyfriend swear by those cookies. Thank you for the inspiration and such a great recipe!!!

After making double batches of these three times, I felt you should know these are the absolute best cookies my husband and I have ever had! We’re a young couple so my cooking experience isn’t vast (the poor guy has suffered through many not-quite-awesome cookies), but these were perfect all three times. they came out a little dry, which made them excellent for dunking in coffee or tea.

our budget is limited and things like oreos are luxuries, so we substituted 1/3 cup of cocoa for them instead. i figured 1/3 cup is about how much cookie dust you’d get from grinding 22 oreos (double batch) in a mortar. The first time I swirled the cocoa in last, the next two I mixed it in with the dry ingredients. Both tasted equally great.

I’d definitely recommend cocoa to anyone else finding themselves without oreos for one reason or another.
