This past week has been a little hectic for me. My DB and I have been busy with work, trying to look for an apartment, finding furniture, and now, this…
First off, here’s a little background. My DB and I got a dog about a year and a half ago. He was rescued from the pound and was about 4-5 years old at the time. He’s an Anatolian shepherd mix (we think he has Sharpei in him because of his black tongue and loose skin) and was abused as a puppy. He’s very cautious around new men and is terrified of cables and abrupt, loud noises. His original owner named him “Bojo.” I kid you not. We shortened his name to just “Bo.”
My DB and I knew that we couldn’t take him with us to Berkeley, so we started looking at no-kill shelters for him weeks ago in case we couldn’t find someone to take him. Unfortunately, no shelter was willing to take him because of his age and because they were already backed up.
This past week, we noticed a growth on Bo’s hind leg. It didn’t seem to bother him; he walked fine and didn’t react when we touched it, but we kept an eye on it. When it didn’t go away after three days, we decided to take him into the vet. This was this past Thursday. The vet stuck a needle in it, expecting to draw pus, but it turned out to be blood. We left Bo overnight at the vet to have surgery that same day to have the growth removed.
This is Bo the first day back after surgery. He had the “cone of shame” on him but he could barely sleep with it and ran into everything, so we took it off. He’s not much of a biter/chewer, so it was fine. Seeing him in a little cast seriously breaks my heart. What was the bump? Well, it was worse than we imagined. It turns out that it was a malignant tumor and the doctor couldn’t completely remove all of it. He said they might have to remove a toe or his paw, depending on the lab results. Basically, Bo has cancer… we just don’t know what kind of cancer it is.
My heart seriously feels for him. He had such a terrible previous life and now this?! What did he ever do to deserve it? π Poor puppy.. He’s even quite young to have cancer.
My DB and I decided to have a biopsy for Bo, in order to find out exactly what’s wrong with him and what we could do to help. The problem is: our total bill is just over 600 dollars now for the surgery and biopsy… not to mention any additional surgery/care that we’ll need to pay for after we get the results back. We are definitely not in a position with that kind of money (especially with having to move out in three months), so I’m asking you guys for your help!
We couldn’t just leave Bo like that, every dog deserves a chance. So I created a paypal donate button especially for Bo’s vet bill pictured above. It’s a click through link that’ll let you donate any amount you wish through paypal. Any amount will help! If you’d like to donate through other means, please contact me at: kim@lovintheoven.com
You see, I work at the Reagan library and we were lucky enough to have him come give a lecture during his book tour a couple of months ago. I even worked the event so I got to sit in and listen to the speech:
Β Yes, that is an actual airplane at my work. It’s Reagan’s Air Force One, the one that flew Nixon’s last flight as President, and you totally get to walk through it. Kinda cool, huh?
There’s G.B. Jr.
Anyways, we really can’t thank you guys enough for taking the time to read our story, being so supportive, and just being there. After all, dogs really are.. a man’s best friend.

Are you still looking for a place for him?
Where do you live?
My neighbor places animals in no kill shelters
Kim says
@anon- yes! i want to help him the most i can before i give him away though.. i know he’s an older dog and most people won’t want a dog with cancer. π i live in the LA area. please email me: kim@lovintheoven.com thanks so much!!

Hi Kim, When Byrd had all her problems, I applied for Care Credit — it’s a line of credit that you can pay off with no interest if you pay it off in 6 months. It was a lifesaver for me. I still use it for her major vet work, since I can almost always comfortably divide the payments into 6 installments and handle them.

What a joke, it’s just a dog, get over it! He should be out down.
Ashley says
clearly anonymous, you are a heartless individual and have never had the joy of being a pet owner. i’d give anything for my animals. he will be ok…. just take good care of him and hopefully you will be able to raise enough money. why do you have to get rid of him?
Anonymous says
Can’t you find an apartment that allows pets?
Kim says
@ashley:: we have to get rid of him because we will be living in an apartment (most likely a studio) when we move up north and they usually won’t allow dogs.
@anon:: i think we’d have better luck if the dog was under 10 pounds. most places don’t allow dogs at all, let alone 70 pound ones. he wouldn’t have room to be free. no backyard, most likely an apt under 500 square feet, too.

I agree with the other anon- it may be sad but it’s just a dog, get it in perspective- you are spending soo much money on ONE DOG when people around the world are dying- isn’t that a better cause?! You are deranged!

That is something worth being sad over!
Kim says
@anons. deranged? haha. okay, whatever you say. if you don’t support it, don’t contribute. simple as that. no harm done. and if you’re so confident, i don’t understand why the haters post as anon. man up to your comments. but all in all, i still support my puppy.

to latest anon:: yes, it is a tragedy. no one ever said it wasn’t. i donated $150 to the red cross when it happened. i’ve always believed in helping others, including dogs.

I can’t believe people are saying to just give up (obviously don’t have a dog-or any sense of humanity). But, I do think if he is going to have to have part of his leg removed, it would be a shame to then have to give him to a shelter. He’ll be in pain and upset, ideally he could go to a family.
DP says
so sorry to hear about your pup π clearly, “anonymous” has never owned a dog. my dog certainly isn’t JUST my dog, he’s my lil munchkin man! hope things work out for the best.
i love dogs says
Can your family take him in?

I’m a bit confused and shocked that you are asking for donations, seeing as you have posted photos from a trip to Paris, as well as owning many expensive designer things. If you were so concerned with this test for your dog, why arent you willing to sell some of those items or anything in order to pay for it? It seems crazy to me that you feature very nice things you own, and then give a sob story about not having the money for your dog that you are willing to give up anyway.
Kim says
@ ilovedogs- no, unfortunately my mom’s scared of dogs and never wants to have one.
@anon- the trip to paris was a family trip, meaning my parents paid for it. i’m not going to ask them for money. and secondly, i am. feel free to bid on my ebay items if you feel so inclined:
http://shop.ebay.com/kimberlywyn/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
with new items going up every week.
if you don’t agree, don’t donate. if you really disagree, you can stop reading my blog. again, i don’t see what the big deal is. no one’s being forced to do anything. if you really can’t handle it, just think of it as a donation into a raffle to win a signed GB book.
@ everyone else: thanks for the support!

I love all the anonymous comments that are absolutely rude! Wow! I guess I would be ashamed into anon if I posted things like that, too. It makes you wonder if it’s the same person :O
I wish you the best with your doggie!
Paula says
90% sure that all those anon comments were from the same person. wow the nerve of some people….anyways i’m really sorry that your dog has to go through that. I have two dogs of my own and i know it would be unbearable to see them suffer like that. i hope you can find a home for him! he is insanely adorable and if i could, i would so take him to live with me!
Makenzie says
To all the anonymous, you all clearly have something wrong with you. Were you not loved as a child??? You must be really unhappy with your life to leave these rude comments. Animals bring such a love into your life. I would do ANYTHING for my animals. They are just another part of the family. Of course there are situations were surgeries/medications cost A LOT and you really have to consider what’s best for the animal & your finances but really, to stoop so low, as to leaving these horribly rude comments to someone who is just trying to help her poor old dog. GET OVER YOURSELF and stop reading her blog if it’s such a huge bother to you. Don’t tear somebody down for something you don’t understand. When you are in her shoes, then maybe you can see things from her perspective. And why don’t you have the decency to show your face instead of hiding behind the title ‘anonymous’??
The Cupcake Architect says
Hi Kim, Have you tried getting an article in a local paper maybe to try and find Bo a new home? I’m not sure how it works in LA but here in the UK there are newspapers/newsletters/e-zines for all of the towns and districts, and for an article you don’t generally have to pay if they are interested in featuring it. I’m sure there will be someone out there who wants an older happy dog, even if he has been ill. Good luck with you search! Sarah x

this bothers me as well. i am a pet lover, i have always had cats and dogs and other animals in my life but when it came to the pet bill i sucked it up and payed for it myself. it was never easy but i put it on a credit card and paid it off, its the responsibly of having a pet, if you are able to buy all of these designer shit clothing and go on all these trips you should have the money and the responsibility to pay for your own dog. also if your not willing to find an an apartment that allows dogs than you should not have got a dog. if you truly love your animal you would find a way to keep him!

What was the outcome of all this?
Is he dead?

Ha I’ve just come across this post after reading some archives and it’s so funny! I can’t believe anyone would stoop so low as to post this pathetic ‘crisis’.
